Annual Compensation Increase

Increase on rates and limits under employment legislation

New rates and limits under employment legislation have been (and will be) introduced, which will affect employers when calculating redundancy payments, statutory maternity, paternity leave, etc.


Redundancy/Short Time Working/Layoff from 1 February 2011:

Limit on a week’s pay for statutory redundancy payments

Previous = £380 per week
New =
£400 per week

Guarantee payment during short time or temporary layoff

Previous =  £21.20 per day (subject to a maximum of 5 days or £106 in any 3 months)
New =
£22.20 per day (subject to a maximum of 5 days or £111 in any 3 months

These limits have been increased to reflect changes in the Retail Prices Index for September.


Families and Pregnancy Related Payments from 11 April 2011:

Statutory maternity pay £124.88 per week £128.73 per week
Maternity allowance £124.88 per week £128.73 per week
Statutory paternity pay £124.88 per week £128.73 per week
Statutory adoption pay £124.88 per week £128.73 per week

Sickness payments from 11 April 2011:

Statutory sick pay (SSP) £79.15 per week
£81.60 per week

National Minimum Wage from 1 October 2010: 

  Previous Rate Current Rate
The standard rate for workers aged 21 and above £5.80 per hour £5.93 per week
For workers aged between 18 to 20 (and those aged 21 and over doing accredited training in the first 6 months of employment) £4.83 per hour £4.92 per hour
For young workers, i.e. those aged 16 to 17 who are not apprenticed £3.57 per hour £3.64 per hour
Apprentices (under 19 years of age or in the first year of their apprenticeship) None £2.50 per hour

The above is a summary of the changes to the main rates and limits. Other rates and limits may have also changed and therefore members are advised to contact the employment team for further information.
